Igniting the potential of young people is a cornerstone of our mission. Every day, hundreds of youth who are experiencing homelessness or trafficking turn to Covenant House Toronto for a safe space, and we are dedicated to helping them achieve their future goals – but we can’t do this by standing still.

From our origin as a 30-bed shelter, over the past 40 years we have continually evolved to offer multi-faceted support based on the complex needs of vulnerable youth.

As we look to the future, we are committed to continuing to offer services that reflect the current landscape and the changing needs of youth. That’s why we’re proud to announce the launch of our new Next Gen Council.

The Next Gen Council is a strategic effort to plan for the next generations of volunteers, supporters, advocates and community leaders of Covenant House Toronto. Our goal is to reach more young people from a broad range of communities by diversifying our leadership with young professionals whose skills and backgrounds enhance our mission of supporting vulnerable youth.

Why Join the Next Gen Council?

The Next Gen Council is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of our philanthropic mission while cross-sharing your skills and growing your professional network. As a member of the Council, you’ll work with a team of like-minded young professionals from a breadth of industries and functions to not only champion for vulnerable youth, but also learn from other members of the Council and expand your skillset.

Council members will also have the opportunity to learn from industry veterans. The Council will be supported by Himal Matthew who serves on the Board of Covenant House Toronto as well as its Fundraising Committee. Himal is the President of Fathom Strategies and has 40 years of experience in business strategy and improvement, as well as marketing and communications skills in a wide range of sectors.

What Does the Next Gen Council Do?

The Next Gen Council will provide useful guidance and a unique perspective to our Leadership team and their committees. Specifically, they’ll offer marketing experience, technical skills, generational insights and business savvy. Of course, every member is passionate about our cause and excited to help Covenant House Toronto strengthen our ability to connect with younger generations of community leaders and volunteers.

Through the Council’s input we will ensure we can continue offering services that are relevant to the issues the young people we serve face every day.

Who Would Make a Good Council Member?

Our ideal Council member is between the ages of 25-35 and offers a unique perspective. They will offer unique professional skills and be willing to engage their networks on the agency’s behalf, participate in fundraising and events, and assist with community development.

Whether your skillset lies in the realm of tech, marketing/communications, business or beyond, we’re looking for members who are driven by a personal connection to the cause and are willing to be an active participant in helping us achieve our goal.

Each Council member should expect a commitment of:

A 2-year seat with an option to sign-on for an additional term
Quarterly one-to-two-hour committee meetings

With the added inclusion of Sub Committee meetings

A maximum of 14 hours for committee meetings (does not include subcommittee meetings for events)
Fundraising towards both your individual and collective council’s goals

What Does the Council Comprise Of?

The Next Gen Council is comprised of 12 members representing a variety of industries and networks. Each Council member sits for a term of two years.

The Council is also supported by Covenant House Toronto’s Christine Foisy-Monk, Director of Development; Dillon Smith, Associate Manager of Corporate Relations; and board member Himal Matthew, President of Fathom Strategies.
