Girl walking down the street wearing a backpack

Emma

“I was almost at the end of the semester, then things got really rough and I had to drop out.”

We often hear these words from the youth we serve at Covenant House. For young people who experience family breakdown or sexual exploitation, life becomes about survival.

Take Emma as an example. Her mother had mental health issues and was not able to provide a stable home. Because of this turmoil, Emma fell behind in school. When she came to Covenant House, Emma got the food, shelter and encouragement she needed. Through pure determination, she was able to catch up and has now graduated from high school.

This fall, you may see young people heading for school with backpacks and books, and not realize that passing math is the least of their worries. With your support, all youth have the chance at a better future.
