Celebrating youth accomplishments every step of the way

As youth move forward toward their goals and away from their experiences with homelessness, for many, this means earning that final credit needed to finish high school or pursuing certifications that will open the door to a career and brighter future.

At Covenant House, no matter how big or small the accomplishments, staff are ready to provide encouragement and celebrate with the youth.

Our team recently hosted a graduation ceremony and celebration for youth who had completed their educational and employment goals.

Our lounge was decked out with a stage, podium and backdrop, flanked by balloons. A large sign spelled out the occasion - GRAD 2025 and tables were filled with chocolate and lemon cakes and snacks, lovingly prepared by staff.

At the ceremony, youth were recognized for a wide range of achievements: completing high school and college prep courses and specialized programs, securing job certifications, gaining employment, and reaching personal milestones like earning their driver’s license and starting new educational or training programs.

One by one, young people walked to the front and received their certificates to the applause of the Covenant House community - the people who’ve been in their corner throughout the journey cheering them on.

Apollo*, a youth who was being celebrated for graduating high school, reflected on the significance of the day.

“Grad was a truly memorable occasion,” he said. “Seeing the effort and care the staff put into organizing this event for us was another powerful reminder of their support and dedication. It meant so much to see our accomplishments celebrated and our future aspirations acknowledged.”

As the new graduates shared their journeys, the room filled with laughter, hugs, and applause. Many of the youth in the room had engaged with Covenant House’s on-site school and employment centre—spaces that offer mentorship, life skills training, and career guidance. These services helped youth build confidence and provide steady encouragement as youth pursue their goals and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.

“For youth in the shelter system, graduation is more than a milestone — it’s a moment of recognition, pride, and hope,” said Chantal Forest, a team lead in the Rights of Passage, our onsite transitional housing program who helped organize the event. “Being celebrated makes them feel seen, valued, and empowered to pursue their dreams. Staff are honoured to be part of this journey and take great joy in uplifting youth as they reach this important achievement.”
