When *Zuri received an education bursary from Covenant House last year, it provided her with more than just financial support—it also gave her hope.
The bursary helped cover tuition, books, and supplies, easing the pressure of school expenses. Just as importantly, it gave her the confidence to know that a caring community of staff and donors believed in her and her future.
When Zuri first moved into Covenant House due to challenges at home, staff encouraged her to apply for the bursary. Although she doubted she would receive it, the news that she had been selected gave her the confidence to take on her first year of college with determination.
“That bursary changed everything,” Zuri said. “It gave me the chance to start my first year smoothly and focus on my studies instead of worrying about how to pay for them.
“Covenant House staff regularly check in, help me stay organized, and encourage me every step of the way,” she said. “All the achievements I’ve had, I share with them.” Today, Zuri is in her second year of the Social Service Worker program at George Brown College – inspired to follow that path by the social workers who’d helped her in her journey so far. For her, being in school is more than just taking classes, it’s about proving to herself that she can thrive, even while managing major health challenges.
“It’s not easy to keep up with school when I don’t feel well, but I’ve learned to keep going,” she said. “Getting As and Bs is something I’m really proud of.”
As a new school year begins, Zuri’s hopes to make the dean’s list, secure a placement where she can learn and give back, and build a career supporting youth and families.
“I want other young people to know, don’t give up, there is hope,” she said. “Even when it gets tough, find something that motivates you and keep going.”
