Celebrating Achievements Big and Small in Our Community

Von, 20, had big plans for his future that included pursuing a certification in construction so he could find work and build a career in the field.

Over the past year, he got focused, completed the work necessary and earned that certification he can now put on his resume.

His achievement did not go unnoticed.

This summer, Von and seven other Covenant House youth who earned their high school diplomas or job certifications in the past year were celebrated at a small surprise graduation ceremony, complete with cake, pizza and decorations.

They were also provided with a cap and gown to wear and printed certificates.  Chantal Forest, a Covenant House transitional housing program supervisor, plans to frame them so they can proudly display them on their walls.

“It’s important to recognize the large and the small achievements. The youth had these goals when they came in, so step by step they achieved each one,” said Chantal. “It was an emotional and heartwarming day.”

Von and the other youth graduates couldn’t stop beaming throughout the ceremony. At one point, Von joyfully flung his cap into the air in celebration.

“I felt really loved, I felt really supported and seeing the sparkle and pride in the eyes of the staff that were there was so great, it was so moving,” Von said.

“They were here since day one, so when I get that big piece of cake, they’re all getting a piece.”
