Smith can’t remember how many resumes he’s sent out in recent months – it could be hundreds.
Despite the challenges, he continues to focus on pursuing his dreams.
With help from Covenant House’s Employment Centre, the 24-year-old has built his resume and learned more about the job market. He also learned how to seek feedback from potential employers who said they are looking for more experience.
Our Employment Centre is helping youth navigate a challenging job market with programs that are specifically designed to support youth experiencing homelessness.
The team in the Centre hold regular, well-attended drop-in sessions where youth can work on their resumes and have hosted workshops on everything from interview skills to professionalism and strong communication in a job setting.
They also work with employers to help create employment opportunities for youth to apply for roles and have a chance to interview to gain valuable experience as they move forward towards their bright futures ahead.
Smith recently interviewed, along with many peers from Covenant House, for a temporary role at an upcoming event in the city. He’s hopeful he’ll land the position so he can earn some money and put the experience on his resume.
“It’s a relief to have the support of Covenant House as I look for work,” Smith said. “The job search can be hard and a bit overwhelming, but when things are overwhelming, I put in more effort.”
