When Maria left foster care, she was referred to Covenant House’s Youth in Transition (YIT) program. The program is designed to help youth living in the community cope with major changes in their lives. YIT workers meet regularly with young people to provide them with valuable one-on-one support such as assistance with finding a place to live, finishing school or securing a job. This type of support lets the young person know that they are not facing their challenges alone.

After a few meetings with her YIT worker Michael, Maria started to open up about her difficult past and it became apparent that she simply needed someone in her corner.

Michael provided the encouragement Maria needed when a housing opportunity came up that required an interview. Sensing that she might be overwhelmed by the process, Michael eased her nervousness by helping her prepare for the interview and act as reference. Maria was thrilled when she found out that her application was accepted.

A few months after moving into her new place, Maria mentioned to Michael that the support he and Covenant House have given her over a six-month period made a world of difference in her life.
