For the COVID-19-related ‘stay home’ mandate to be effective, you first need a home. This is not the case for most of the youth we serve. So finding housing for youth is especially important right now and our housing team is crucial to this work.
Danny, a housing worker with Covenant House, explains that the team is working harder than ever.
“It’s business as usual. We won’t stop giving young people a chance.”
The housing team supports young people who are ready to live independently to take the next step. Staff help secure affordable housing by working with landlords and assisting with searches, applications and agreements as well as moving youth into their new homes. Once youth are settled, workers stay in touch to support their progress.
During COVID-19, there is an even greater need.
Youth currently looking for a home have deep anxiety around being homeless during this pandemic. They also face a lack of viewing opportunities and affordable accommodations in Toronto. For youth who are already housed, they have lost jobs, can’t pay bills and are experiencing isolation.
Our housing workers are going above and beyond to get youth through this difficult time.
“Every day we face different challenges - from looking for new housing to eviction prevention,” says Danny. “We’re here to help navigate options, provide resources and just offer support if the youth feel lonely.”
When reflecting on what keeps him motivated, Danny says: “I get a positive feeling whenever I help youth secure housing and keep them housed. It feels like I may be changing their life for the better.”
