From bright new walls to an open concept space, we’ve renovated an essential service area at Covenant House. We are deeply grateful to those who supported this work, and wanted to share our new look.
Our Community Support Services program operates as a drop-in for youth who are homeless and for youth in the community who need the extra support. Nearly 2,000 youth use this service every year, and it is often their first point of contact at Covenant House.
Here, young people have consistent access to food, clean clothes, healthcare and simply someone to talk with. Young people who use this space can then also connect to our other services, from shelter, to counselling, to job training.
As Karen McGavin, Manager of the drop-in centre, explains: “The young people who visit begin to trust that someone’s out there with them and they’re not on this journey alone.”
The original space was broken out into a number of small rooms, without much access to natural light. It did not reflect the spirit of warmth, connection and compassion that we bring to our work with youth. It also didn’t have the room needed to accommodate drop-ins seven days a week, all year round.
By removing office walls and widening the main area, we can serve more youth, increase space for engagement and build necessary trusting relationships. We are so grateful to our donors for their support of this renovation. By providing something as simple as warm, comfortable and safe spaces, you help young people feel welcome as soon as they walk in the door.
